Ogawa Mataji

Viscount Ogawa Mataji was a general in the early Imperial Japanese Army. He was also the fatherinlaw of Field Marshal Gen Sugiyama.

Ogawa was born to a samurai family his father was a retainer to the daimy of Kokura Domain, in what is now Kitakyushu, Fukuoka. He studied rangaku under Egawa Hidetatsu and fought as a Kokura samurai against the forces of Chsh Domain during the Bakumatsu period.
